Lewis Hamilton has admitted that a key element of his contract discussions with McLaren-Mercedes, is the trophies. Hamilton would like to keep them, but it could prove a sticking point, as the team historically never let their drivers keep the trophies.
A little math will tel us that Lewis Hamilton have amassed a staggering 47 trophies for the McLaren team since he first appeared on the F1 scene, in the Australian GP in 2007, where he finished in third, his first podium finish in a string of nine consecutive podium finishes that year. Hamilton is expected to stay with McLaren for another five years, a deal which is estimated to be worth £100m. Still, it looks like money isn´t everything for Lewis and keeping his trophies could persuade him to re-sign sooner rather than later.
“We haven’t spoken about it yet, but in a lot of teams the drivers get to keep their trophies,” Hamilton said recently. “It’s about your trophies and your helmets – they are the two most valuable things. I don’t care if they don’t give me my cars, but those two things are what you put your blood and sweat into.”
Hamilton took his second win this season at Hungaroring, and needs just one more point to be par with defending world champion Sebastian Vettel.
